About the Competition

The IMEA Composition Competition is an annual competition open to Indiana students grades 6–12. It offers young composers the opportunity to have their work evaluated by established composers/educators who provide written feedback, so that every composer who enters can learn and grow as a creative musical thinker. Winning works are, whenever possible, performed at the IMEA State Conference, so that other young musicians have the chance to experience performing new music composed by their peers, often as a world premiere.

All composers submitting works will receive written comments from competition judges

Winning works will be recognized at the 2014 State Conference by an IMEA plaque
(Additional prizes may be awarded at IMEA discretion)

Winning works in chamber and solo categories will be invited for performance at the 2014 IMEA State Conference (Composers may be responsible for providing performers)

Winning works in large ensemble categories will be considered for 2014 IMEA State Conference performance by IMEA All-State or Honors groups or guest ensembles

Composers of winning works will be paired with a mentor who will supervise the preparation of score and parts and advise the composer in any way that will lead to a more successful performance of the work
(Composers will be responsible for creating and distributing legible score and parts in a timely fashion)

Works performed at the IMEA State Conference will be recorded and a CD copy of the recording will be sent to each winning composer
