Anderson University

The workshop will feature three different sessions, with a schedule that allows attendees to take advantage of all three presentations.

Schedule will include…

“ESL in Music: Tips and Tricks that will keep them coming back for more”
Strategies that have been successfully used in the music classroom with ESL students will be the main focus of this presentation.  Also, tips for finding curriculum to meet their needs while being highly engaged to help keep your classroom moving smoothly and effectively.

“We the music makers:  How to be effective when teaching music to children with special needs”
As a result of increasing population of students with special needs, music teachers must rethink the method of delivery in order to allow all children in their classrooms access to music education.  This session will focus on understanding the challenges that face children with special needs in the music classroom. This session will be based on the presenter's work in the field of music therapy and music education. The presenter will suggest strategies for music teaching and learning and building relationships.

“Special Education in the Choral Performance Setting”
Learn strategies for working with children with special needs in a performance setting based on the work of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir’s new group, Jubilate. The choir for children with special needs is a year-long experience modeled off of the rest of the ICC’s choirs, with adjustments made to fit the needs of the singers and their disabilities. A variety of teaching techniques are utilized including the Kodály method, Orff-Schulwerk, independent as well as peer-supported learning, and movement. Proper singing techniques, theory, sight-reading and part-singing are all incorporated into the curriculum.
